What is a Recreation or Rec Pond?

Overview

Recreation swim ponds, also called natural swim ponds are environmentally friendly chemical free ecosystems. They rely on natural filtration and other biofilters to keep the water healthy and crystal clear all year round. They utilize flowers, plants and natural stone to create a backyard oasis unlike traditional swimming pools that are surrounded by basic concrete. Recreation Swim ponds bring nature to your backyard.

Are Rec ponds a lot of maintenance?

Rec ponds, if properly installed and maintained, are virtually maintenance free and do not require any of the daily cleanings or chlorine additives that traditional pools require. Pond liners are a super thick 45mil liner with an industry standard 25 year replacement estimate unlike pool liners that average 27mil and have to be replaced every 5-7 years.

Costs?

Rec ponds have a huge yearly cost savings compared to pools. They have special direct drive pumps that require less power to run than traditional pool pumps. And not having to add in all the chlorine and other chemicals all year long, just means more money in your pocket.

Use?

In the winter, pools are typically covered by large expensive tarps and closed for half the year. Rec ponds have ALL YEAR VALUE. During the winter, you can keep your pond uncovered and enjoy the year round beauty of your pond.

Multiuse

Most pools are put in for families’ with children, and as the children get older and move out, the pools are neglected and seldom used. Design Process

A Ledman Lagoons and Ponds Designer will come out to your home or business and meet with you to discuss your needs and vision. He or she will take measurements, photos, and gather all the pertinent information for your design. Our design team will use cutting edge software to design your pond and provide you with a 3D rendering of the design.

How Long?

Once the contract is approved, work typically begins within 1-3 weeks. Project durations vary from 1 week or longer depending on the size and scope of your pond.

 

How do you filter Recreational Ponds?

How are recreation swim ponds kept clean without chemicals?

Recreational ponds use natural filtration systems called bogs or wetland filters. Pond pumps force water through a gravel bed that performs basic mechanical filtration. At the same time, beneficial enzymes start to build up within the gravel bed and help break down other materials. Natural filtration systems have marginal wetland plants and flowers planted directly into the gravel beds. The roots of these plants soak up nutrients in the water creating a nutrient reduced water flow back into the pond. Since the pond doesn’t have the required nutrients in the water to support unwanted growth, such as moss and algae, and other nuisance pond water plants, the water remains clear and healthy. A natural ecosystem is created.

Additional Features

If you life in a noisy area, adding a waterfall to your rec pond can assist in canceling out that noise. The serene sound of a waterfall can help mask the annoying sounds of your neighbors, vehicle traffic and give you peace and relaxation in your own backyard.

Adding a jumping boulder for kids is always fun. Large boulders can be placed on the side or even in the pond itself and provide hours of entertainment for everyone.
